About Us
The unClassroom.org was created to promote the understanding of basic science among both adults and kids through a variety of charitable activities. Foremost, the organization is the producer of "Crosstown Kids", a childrens' educational TV show airing on Fayette County Public Schools Educational Television, Insight Cable channel 13.
Episodes of the show feature three children exploring a basic science principle and visiting a business or laboratory that utilizes the principle as a matter of their everyday operation. Viewers are able to see that what they learn in school matters in the "real" world - i.e. outside of the classroom.
Rather than the tradional interview or industrial tour TV show formats, "Crosstown Kids" episodes typically portray the children visiting the business on their own accord to seek help with a project they're working on. Instead of forcing the content on viewers without motivation, episodes are designed to parallel the natural curiosities and thought processes of ordinary play.
Beyond the show, the organization further promotes science literacy by offering professional development to Kentucky science teachers, presenting at the Kentucky Science Teachers Association annual conference, providing educational content on the websites www.crosstownkids.org (designed for children) and www.theunclassroom.org (designed for teachers), and making public and classroom appearances.
Founded by technical professionals who have demonstrated a passion for sharing their expertise as scientists and engineers with persons of all ages and levels of experience, the organization strives for excellence in creating novel methods to advance the field of informal science education. Needless to say, we have many cool and creative things in the works.
Stay tuned!
